Burn Hall Fish Pass

JC Consulting were commissioned to complete the civil and structural engineering design for the now complete fish pass works on the River Browney at Langley moor, Durham.

Project Overview

JC Consulting were commissioned to complete the civil and structural engineering design for the now complete fish pass works on the River Browney at Langley moor, Durham. We were appointed by ESH Civil Engineering and the Environment Agency (EA) to design a reinforced concrete fish pass which provided a route for the migratory fish to travel upstream with little effect from rising is dropping river levels. The need for healthy rivers is integral to society as it’s the need for us to monitor them.

Burn hall is the site of a weir and gauging station used to allow the EA to monitor the river levels and flow as part of the continued efforts to inform and protect the population from flood risk. This conflict between man and nature is managed by the introduction of the fish and eel pass ensuring the migration up the river is not prohibited and keeps the upstream rivers and pools healthy and functional.
