Project Overview
The Star and Shadow is one of the most exciting organisations to make a home in the Ouseburn in the last decade, regularly playing host to all manner of world cinema, live music, art exhibitions, craft fairs and creative workshops. The Star and Shadow embraces its D.I.Y work ethic and avant-garde following and is run entirely by volunteers, giving this creatively diverse venue its bohemian, somewhat anarchic atmosphere, and ensuring there is nowhere else like it in Newcastle. We are proud to have provided civil and structural design services for the star and shadow cinema project. This was a project that was completed by the public for the public.
Star and Shadow Cinema is a co-operative and registered Community Benefit Society which runs an independent theatre whilst providing a venue for artists and musicians. The organisation is run entirely by volunteers with decisions made democratically. This exciting community led scheme includes a Cinema, Venue Space, Café, Community Spaces, Artist Studios and Workshops which are all to be built by the volunteers who have many different skills and expertise– a truly immense DIY project. Since completion in 2018 the cinema has gone on to win several major awards.
