Project Overview
Birdoswald Roman Fort is part of Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II listed (Courtyard Buildings). The site is run by English Heritage with the existing visitor centre providing interpretation displays for the Roman Fort as well as a new café, retail, education space and accommodation. We were commissioned by English Heritage to provide the civil and structural design associated with the development which is modern and exemplary in its form, noting it will act as a template for other English
The project looked at an overall masterplan and refurbishment/ new build options for the centre including visitor flow and experience. Which ultimately comprised of replacing a tired and declining visitor’s centre at Birdoswald Roman Fort with a new modern facility, to increase visitor numbers and has since proved a resounding success, having already seen a significant
increase in users, particularly with schools and other interest groups. The design involved both refurbishment and a new build contemporary glazed link.
