Project Overview

The Bigg Market is synonymous with the reputation of “the good nightlife” that can be found at the heart of Newcastle. However, it is fair to say that this area has been in steady decline over the last 15 years or so with other areas of the city embracing an upsurge. Newcastle is currently undergoing a widespread exciting phase of development: further development of the Quayside area and science central are facilitating real beneficial growth to this special city. NE1 had identified the Bigg Market project as a key part of the larger scale development plans requiring urgent work in enhancing this area.

The project included extensive refurbishment to the façades of the buildings to the streetscape; complete remodelling of the drainage, the hard landscaping and the historical Grade I listed Victorian underground toilets located at the heart of the thoroughfare.
